Burnout is a myth.
Not if you’ve ever felt completely drained, like a battery with no charge.
But what if burnout is more than just feeling exhausted?
What if it’s a signal that something needs to change—a chance to start fresh and live a life that truly matters?
This issue of The Inner Journey explores how burnout can actually be an opportunity for a new beginning.
Maybe you’re doing things that don’t make you happy.
Maybe you’re stuck in a routine that’s not right for you.
Burnout isn’t just about overwork—it can also be a sign of an existential crisis, where you feel disconnected from your life’s work and purpose.
Here’s where most folks get it wrong: they see burnout as failure.
They either grit their teeth and push through the pain, getting even more depleted, or they abandon their dreams altogether.
But the real mistake?
Not recognizing burnout for what it is—a loud, unignorable sign that something has to change.
Burnout could be a necessary stage in your personal evolution—like the caterpillar in its cocoon—where the old version of you needs to ‘burn out’ so that a stronger, more authentic version can emerge.
Burnout isn’t the end. It starts a new journey toward finding what really matters in life.
What we’re covering today:
Burnout is like your body and mind waving a big red flag.
It’s not just about being tired—it’s about something deeper.
Imagine you’re driving a car, and suddenly a warning light comes on.
You wouldn’t just ignore it, right?
You’d stop and check what’s wrong.
Burnout demands the same attention.
It’s not just about doing too much.
Research shows burnout often stems from a deeper issue: a disconnection from purpose and meaning.
When you lose touch with why you’re doing what you’re doing, burnout creeps in, even if you’re not overwhelmed with tasks.
Burnout is your inner self shouting for change.
It’s an opportunity—a chance to reassess, realign, and reconnect with what truly matters.
Maybe it’s time to take a break, try something new, or simply slow down.
The key is to listen.
Burnout is telling you it’s time to pause and reflect on what you really want in life.
Don’t ignore it.
Burnout, boreout, and brownout may sound like buzzwords, but they’re all rooted in one thing: disconnection.
Burnout is when you’re so tired and stressed that you can’t keep going. It’s like you’ve been running a race for too long without taking a break.
Boreout is different. It happens when you’re bored because your work or daily life doesn’t challenge you. You’re going through the motions, but your mind is elsewhere, questioning why you’re even bothering.
Brownout is another side of the same problem. It’s when you feel disconnected from the purpose of what you’re doing. You might be working hard but don’t feel it’s making a difference. It’s like playing a game where you no longer know the rules.
Whether you’re bored, overworked, or simply disconnected, these states are all your inner self’s way of telling you it’s time for a change.
Let me tell you about my own journey through burnout.
In 1997, I began my career at IBM as an engineer.
By 2002, I joined a small family business with just 8 engineers.
By 2007, I was leading it into a 7-figure state-of-the-art enterprise.
In 2012, I became a Professional Certified Coach.
But I did not go fully in.
I was caught back in the family business.
I raised millions to fuel growth.
I hired people who were much better than me.
I traveled East and West, South and North.
The inner voice was still talking.
In 2015, as we were in the middle of a steep growth curve, a crisis hit the industry.
This is the precise moment when I realized I was completely depleted.
I had all the symptoms of burnout.
It was too late.
This wasn’t just exhaustion.
It was the start of a deep, dark night of the soul.
For over a year, I questioned everything: my purpose, path, and life.
It was painful, but it was also a turning point.
In 2018, I emerged from that darkness with a new vision.
I revived my coaching business, focusing on helping entrepreneurs align their businesses with their true purpose.
My burnout was a rebirth.
I can finally breathe deeply and effortlessly, literally and figuratively.
I remain more sensitive, having experienced an extreme form of pain.
But this sensitivity brings me closer to myself and to others.
I can now use it to synchronize myself in a more subtle way with the world around me.
I feel pain deeper. I feel joy deeper, too.
I feel both more vulnerable and stronger.
I’ve amplified myself.
I’ve come closer to who I am.
Today, I’m in my flow, making an impact in ways I never imagined.
I coach entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and themselves.
I guide them to have a more intimate relationship with themselves, helping them find fulfillment and success on their own terms.
My story reflects what recent research and philosophical insights suggest: burnout is not the end, but a turning point.
Like Viktor Frankl’s concept of finding meaning in suffering, burnout forced me to confront the big questions:
It urges them to take steps toward a more fulfilling life.
Changing your life because of burnout isn’t easy.
Some challenges can make it hard to move forward.
First, there’s fear.
Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or even fear of what other people might think.
It’s normal to feel scared when you’re thinking about making big changes.
Another challenge is pressure from society, your job, or even yourself.
You might feel like you have to keep going, even when you know you need a break.
This pressure can make it hard to listen to what you really want.
Then there’s doubt.
You might doubt yourself and wonder if you’re strong enough to make changes.
You might think, “What if I fail?” or “What if things don’t get better?”
But here’s the thing: you can overcome these challenges.
Start small.
Take one step at a time.
Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.
Give yourself permission to slow down and think about what you really want.
Remember, the hardest part is often just taking that first step.
Once you do, you’ll find that change isn’t as scary as it seems.
Overcoming these challenges requires not just courage but also new perspectives.
If you’re feeling burned out, the first thing you need to do is stop and listen to yourself.
What is your body telling you?
What do your feelings say?
Maybe you need more rest, or maybe it’s time to try something new.
One way to start is by setting small goals that help you feel better.
This could be as simple as taking a short walk every day, spending time with people who make you happy, or finding a hobby that excites you.
Another important step is to think about what really matters to you.
What are your values?
What do you want your life to look like?
What would you use your life for if it was not for survival?
Once you know these things, you can start making changes that bring you closer to your true self.
You don’t have to do everything at once.
Just take it one step at a time.
Remember, burnout is your chance to hit the reset button and start living a life that makes you happy and fulfilled.
But don’t just settle for the basics.
Explore more innovative ways to heal and grow.
Psychedelic therapy, though unconventional, has shown promise in helping people break free from the patterns that contribute to burnout.
Similarly, mindfulness isn’t just about stress relief—it’s a powerful tool for transformation.
By deeply connecting with your inner self, you can turn burnout into a profound opportunity for personal evolution.
Burnout is not a problem to fix.
It’s a solution to a life not aligned with your values and purpose.
It isn’t a dead end—it’s a fork in the road.
You can choose to keep going the same way, or you can choose a new direction—one that leads to a life that really matters.
By taking this chance to change, you can find more happiness and meaning in everything you do.
Burnout could be the wake-up call you’ve been waiting for—a chance to realign with your true purpose and live a life that resonates with your deepest values.
